Go get your hair done at the salon. Yeah, it costs a whole lot more- but the color stays. Also, always use hair products for color-treated hair- that makes a big difference.

The last time I got my hair professionally dyed I asked her the same thing. I ALWAYS have problems with my hair color fading fast. She said to definitely make sure you are using color safe shampoo because if you don't, it strips the color in your hair even faster.

If this still doesn't help, you could probably go into a local beauty salon or call them to ask them what you can do.

Use a shampoo and conditioner for brunette hair, and, every now and then, use that John Freida Glaze stuff.

Use only color safe hair care products and make sure that the dye you are using does 100% gray coverage. Products that don't tend to fade a lot faster when you are trying to go darker.

If you are doing it yourself then you might want to try a salon. If it's the salon then they need to up the toner. Also, they have this new Pantene for Brunetter that works well with colored hair and whateve color you have. I've tried it and it works pretty well. Try not to wash your hair after dying for like two to three days so it gives it a chance to stick in there. I would also try maybe going in with slightly dirty hair, that way the oils will make the dye stick better so it's more effective. You need to redo your ahir every 6 weeks too, just like cutting your hair.
