I mix some hydrogen peroxide with my shampoo, it lightens the hair and gives you highlights. I take a medicine dropper, fill it twice and put it in a brand new bottle of shampoo, then shake the bottle real good, and then shampoo as usual. It wont happen over night tho, but gradually.

I prefer Preference by Loreal. It doesn't seem to be as hard on your hair as some of the others.

To make dark hair lighter you have to basically bleach it...
I would honestly suggest first going to a salon and letting them do it because people usually screw themselves up big time when it comes to going from dark to light...

I beg you, my fellow brown haired beauty- don't do it!
The box of color is not-EVER-never-the way to go lighter!! It will be brassy aka orangey-yellowy white trashy since in two days you can see your roots start to pop out!!
That's because of the peroxide that's in it- you have to use bleach to get the good blond color and you could (and most likely would) fry your locks to a parched crisp!
Somethings are absolutely worth paying extra for and take it from this brown hair with beautiful blonde HIGHLIGHTS, this is one of them.
Get highlights- NOT all over color to avoid the trailer trash Barbie look unless you have enough time, money and hair to spare every two weeks of maintenance.
I have actually given this pearl of wisdom to those standing and pondering in the hair color section- and I'm really not one to give unasked advice- unless it's going to really be regretful.
If you have dark hair and want to color grays- then it's great, actually good for your hair since that's dye. But don't go darker than your real color or it will grow out with lighter roots, even when you redo it (another trashy mistake)
GOOD LUCK!!
